Est. year: 1985
AER is a German loudspeaker workshop from Stuttgart, founded in 1985 by Filip Keller and known first of all for its BD series of full-range drivers, which are sold both as bare drive units to other builders and as the core of AER's own complete speakers. The company name stands for Acoustic Electronic Research. It is a small firm with hand-built production in Germany, and its drivers have been used by several other horn and open-baffle speaker makers in Europe.
Range & what it's known for
The BD driver family runs from the BD 2 and BD 2B through the 8-inch BD 3 and BD 3B to the BD 4, BD 5 and BD 7 Statement, with a single BD 3 costing around EUR 4,000. These units are meant to be run without a crossover from low-powered triode amplifiers, and the complete AER speakers are built around that idea. The Aerofon horn series comes in a large Experienz and a smaller Essence version. The Excenter is an open-baffle horn with a 650 mm off-centre mouth developed by Markus Boldyreff, who leads horn cabinet work at AER, and the Jazz system shown in Munich pairs an Excenter with a separate subwoofer, reaches 100 dB sensitivity and was listed at EUR 15,000. A Custom series and the Subway bass unit round off the range, so a buyer can start with drivers alone and later move to a finished AER cabinet.
Who owns it and where it's made
AER Lautsprecherproduktion GmbH is a private company registered in Stuttgart and still run by its founder Filip Keller, who designs the drivers, with Markus Boldyreff responsible for horn development. Every driver and cabinet is made in Germany at the Stuttgart workshop, and the company has stayed at that scale for four decades rather than moving production abroad or licensing its designs.
The lineup in this catalog
Seven AER loudspeakers are listed here, from compact models to large floorstanding horn systems, at prices from roughly EUR 5,000 to more than EUR 30,000.
Who it's for
AER is aimed at listeners who run single-ended triode or other low-wattage tube amplifiers and want a crossoverless speaker that such amplifiers can drive with ease. The bare BD drivers are the entry route for a DIY or custom-cabinet owner, the Aerofon Essence or an Excenter-based system is the first complete AER speaker, and the Aerofon Experienz with a Subway bass unit is the upgrade path for a large room. Because these are high-sensitivity designs, they make less sense for someone with a powerful solid-state amplifier and a small flat.
