10. Pro-Ject Speaker Box 3 E Carbon

Pros - accurate sound for a small price

Pro-Ject Speaker Box 3 E Carbon - affordable bookshelf speakers with a fairly balanced sound. The acoustics are quite capable of revealing the emotions of music to you, albeit without a flurry of details or a strong bass line (the frequency response is limited to 83 Hz below) - their choice for a small room (both table and wall mounting are allowed) and a modest budget seems ideal. The two-way speakers are equipped with a 3” midrange / low-frequency driver with a modern diaphragm made of carbon fiber glass and a 0.75” silk dome tweeter. Grills with magnetic fastening are also included. One “but” - with 85 dB sensitivity and 4 Ohms of impedance, it is better to use stable amplification with the loudspeakers, approaching the upper declared limit of the supply of 100 W.

Q-Acoustics Q3020c

9. Q-Acoustics 3020c

Pros – large-scale sound with compact dimensions

Q-Acoustics 3020c demonstrate amazing output and sound scale – you clearly don’t expect this from such modest-sized enclosures. The latest drivers accumulate all the developments of the famous manufacturer, offering advanced midrange/low-frequency drivers with powerful magnetic systems and 120 mm C3 (Continuous Curved Cone) diffusers, providing wide dispersion and explosive dynamics. The 22 mm tweeters, enclosed in a sealed chamber, are mechanically isolated from the enclosure partitions, which prevents interference from the main driver. The rounded enclosures use an additional point system for improving rigidity, which suppresses resonances. It should be noted that the speakers operate in the range from 60 Hz and have a sensitivity of 87 dB with an impedance of 6 ohms – the load on the amplifier will be high.

Acoustic Energy AE300²
Acoustic Energy AE300². Image source - (c) Acoustic Energy

8. Acoustic Energy AE300²

Pros – excellent timbre fidelity, good soundstage

The newly rethought cult series of Acoustic Energy AE300 speakers was developed practically “from scratch” - and even the younger Acoustic Energy AE300² has something to surprise savvy music lovers. New drivers with diffusers made of a mixture of paper and coconut fiber guarantee excellent timbre fidelity, and in terms of soundstage width and localization, the acoustics have few equals even in a more expensive price segment. The final touches to the impeccable image are soft dome tweeters using the developments of the Corinium project, and enclosures with RSC (Resonance Suppression Composite) anti-resonance technology, previously used only in the top-end Reference series. The loudspeakers provide a very extended bass from 42 Hz, the high frequencies are also extended (up to 29,000 Hz), but with 6 Ohms of impedance and 86 dB of sensitivity, it is better to use a 100-120 W amplifier in a pair, that is, at the upper limit of the requirements.

Leak Sandwich 150
Leak Sandwich 150. Image source - (c) Leak

7. Leak Sandwich 150

Pros – exceptional sense of rhythm, gorgeous attack

The modern reincarnation of the classic Leak Sandwich 150 breaks records both in pressure and rhythmic sound – your legs will want to start dancing. In this price segment, you can find more sophisticated performers that will provide greater resolution, but in terms of coherence, emotionality, dynamism and integrity of musical narrative, the Leak Sandwich 150 simply has no equal.

The secret of the simple design is simple – two bands, a 6.5” midrange/low-frequency driver and a 1.2” tweeter with a textile dome. But the main driver here uses the “Sandwich” diffuser, which made the company famous in 1961 and was carefully recreated and improved using modern technologies. The exceptional rigidity of the diffuser is achieved by using an aluminum coating and polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam - thus, changes in geometry during the movement of the diffuser are reduced to zero. The speaker is equipped with a long and powerful voice coil. The tweeter is equipped with a rear chamber, damped to absorb the signal from the rear of the dome. The speaker body is assembled from MDF and composite boards, laid in layers and equipped with braces to ensure optimal anti-resonance decoupling. The speakers allow for 150 W of power and to reveal their talents, we strongly recommend fulfilling this request - with 4 Ohms of impedance and 86.5 dB of sensitivity, this approach will provide you with the declared extended bass from 44 Hz.

KEF R3 Meta
KEF R3 Meta. Image source - (c) KEF

5. KEF R3 Meta

Pros – extended bass, crystal clear high frequencies

KEF R3 Meta are designed according to a three-band scheme and can form an impressive sound canvas with a punchy bass, transparent midrange and sparkling high frequencies. The speakers are equipped with the company's favorite coaxial Uni-Q driver (acts as a single point source, assembled from a 125 mm driver and a 25 mm tweeter) of the 12th generation with MAT technology, which voices the mid and high frequencies. The bass is handled by a hybrid 6.5” aluminum woofer with an exceptionally long diffuser stroke.

The company's Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) absorbs 99% of unwanted overtones, truly cleaning the sound and making it hyperrealistic - for this, a complex labyrinth structure located behind the speaker assembly is used. Even the grills here are of the highest quality - made of microfiber with 1801 precision-cut holes for each driver. 4 Ohms of impedance and 87 dB of sensitivity decate the load on the amplifier - it is better to use the recommended 180 W, then the sound pressure of up to 110 dB and well-controlled bass from 38 Hz will be available.

Paradigm Founder 40B
Paradigm Founder 40B. Image source - (c) Paradigm

4. Paradigm Founder 40B

Pros - the highest overload capacity, the effect of the wall of sound

The Paradigm Founder series has already become a byword among audiophiles - and the junior Paradigm Founder 40B bookshelf loudspeakers continue to hold their places in the ratings with an iron grip year after year. Indeed, bookshelf loudspeakers are rarely able to guarantee the effect of the wall of sound - but here it is present, the sound images are at risk in full size, and the explosive dynamics are more reminiscent of large-sized floorstanding acoustics.

The Paradigm Founder 40B uses proprietary drivers with high-power magnets, long-stroke diffusers, and multi-layer voice coils. 1" AL-MAC Ceramic Dome with Oblate Spheroid Waveguide and Perforated Phase-Aligning Tweeter Lens, ferro-fluid damped is complemented by a 6” Ultra-High-Excursion AL-MAG driver with Perforated Phase-Aligning Lens, Gen3 Active Ridge Technology with Advanced SHOCKMOUNT Isolation, and a 1.5” high-temp multi-layered voice coil. A special chic - 8 Ohm impedance at 92 dB sensitivity - the speakers will drive even from a not very strong power amplifier, although the permissible input power reaches 120 W. Well, the bass from 41 Hz seems to be a record for the category.

Monitor Audio Studio 89

3. Monitor Audio Studio 89

Pros – mind-boggling amount of detail, superb handling of the finest nuances

The latest Monitor Audio Studio 89 can drive you crazy with resolution and a flurry of detail – while maintaining the highest musicality and timbral accuracy. There is not a hint of an unpleasant clinical approach here – on the contrary, it seems as if the veil has been lifted from the performers, allowing us to better understand their original intent.

The Monitor Audio Studio 89 release is dedicated to the famous Studio series, first presented by the company in the late 80s of the XX century – now rethought in terms of modern engineering solutions. Two woofers (RDT III technology, combined C-CAM diffusers made of ceramic and magnesium alloy) are located symmetrically on either side of the tweeter – the MTM scheme provides a uniform directivity pattern and a balanced stereo image. The MPD III ribbon tweeter, like the main drivers, is mounted in a single block, completely isolated from the front panel to suppress resonances. The original slotted port is not forgotten, which, although it is brought out to the rear panel, does not block the installation of the loudspeakers close to the wall. 86 dB sensitivity and 6 Ohm resistance dictate the use of very powerful (up to 300 W) amplification.

Perlisten Audio R4b

2. Perlisten R4b

Pros - patented diffusers provide exceptionally airy and precise sound

Perlisten R4b pump air by the liter, and their micro- and macrodynamic characteristics look excellent for almost any price group. We really have a new generation of acoustics in front of us - a 165-mm low-frequency speaker is made of patented HPF cellulose (it took two years to create it), and an assembly of three 26 mm silk domes DPC Array works at the HF. Despite the THX label, the acoustics will surprise you both in home theater and in stereo – although you should pay due attention to the amplification. At 4 Ohms impedance, the speakers demonstrate an extremely low sensitivity of 84.6 dB, so 200 W of amplification is strictly recommended.

Musical Fidelity LS5/9A
Musical Fidelity LS5/9A. Image source - (c) Musical Fidelity

1. Musical Fidelity LS5/9

Pros – honest monitor sound without embellishment and sentimentality, brilliant work with any genre

Classics never get old – and our rating is headed by the Musical Fidelity LS5/9 acoustics – a reincarnation at a modern level of classic BBC monitors, first released in 1983 and intended for professional recording studios. The model is designed according to a two-way scheme and is distinguished by absolute genre impartiality, equally well coping with jazz, rock, and classical music. The clean, perfectly balanced sound of the Musical Fidelity LS5/9 never allows a bit of coloring, always maintaining a lively and natural performance. The knees are especially good at timbre authenticity – in this regard, they are already approaching the High-End echelon.

The 210 mm mid/low woofer pumps up the bass perfectly (frequency response from 50 Hz), and the large 34 mm tweeter with phase correction brilliantly copes with high frequencies. Musical Fidelity LS5/9 also allow sound adjustment for a specific listening room, high frequencies can be adjusted using stepped resistors with a wire jumper. The best part is that the speaker system will not require you to spend a lot of money on amplification - with a sensitivity of 89 dB and an impedance of 8 Ohms, the declared supplied 100 W is more than enough. The cherry on the cake is the weighty cases made of 9 mm birch plywood.
