Floorstanding loudspeakers — Audio Physic CODEX

The Codex is a four-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Audio Physic and the first Audio Physic speaker to combine the brand's PowerTrain technology with a newly developed HHCM SL midrange driver. Audio Physic says this platform improves resolution and spatial reproduction, while the cabinet keeps the company's minimalist design.

Key specs that matter

The Codex reaches from 28Hz to 40kHz, with 89dB sensitivity into a demanding 4 ohm load. The four-way bass-reflex design uses a 10-inch long-throw bass driver, a 7-inch driver on the front of the cabinet, a 150mm aluminium-cone midrange and a further mid-bass driver. The speaker stands approximately 119.5cm tall.

Engineering and use context

The 10-inch long-throw unit is housed in a separate inner chamber and hands over to the 7-inch front driver from 100Hz upward. Audio Physic states that this split keeps the bass under control with virtually any signal. Every chassis has its own individual chamber inside the cabinet, which entirely removes interaction through a shared air volume. The drivers make no direct contact with the front baffle, so micro-vibration is kept to a minimum and stray partial oscillations do not reach the cones. Numerous internal braces and extremely stiff open-cell ceramic foam elements give the cabinet high structural stability while taking up little of the internal volume. The crossover is spread over several levels, with high-grade components placed close behind each driver they serve. The speaker terminals are WBT nextgen binding posts, mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body.
